Perth is the capital, and largest, city of the Western Australia (WA) and is famous for its liveability, sunshine, world-class wine, wildlife and its isolation.
Perth was named after the city of Perth in Scotland by Captain James Stirling in 1829 and gained city status in 1856. Made up of 250 suburbs, Perth stretches south from Two Rocks to Singleton and reaches inland east to The Lakes.
The central business district of Perth is restricted by the Swan River to the south and east, with the incredible Kings Park located on the western end.
Kings Park is one of the biggest city parks in the world, even bigger than Central Park in New York City… Yet Perth city residents have this wonder right on their doorstep!
Outside of the main CBD, major hubs within Perth include Fremantle and Joondalup. Perth is Australia’s fourth-most-populous city with more than 2 million people who call it home.
‘Perthites’ can enjoy a sunset over the ocean, relax in the surrounding natural bushland, and enjoy more days of sunshine than any other Australian capital city!
The 3,200 hours of sunshine a year certainly comes in handy when you have a string of 19 stunning and uncrowded beaches!
Considering they endure long, hot and dry summers, Perth locals deserve some beach time before the cold and wet winter weather hits!
Cottesloe Beach has great cafés, Mettams Pool features a snorkelling reef, Leighton Beach boasts blindingly white sand and rip-free waters, and Trigg Beach and North Beach are the best for children due to the large playground and charming rock pools.
The city was lucky enough to host 1962 Commonwealth Games and the 1987 America’s Cup. But this is not what people these days know Perth for.
Rottnest island is located just 19kms off the coast of Freemantle and is home to a social media star, the extremely friendly quokka. The quokka is a marsupial found only in Western Australia who are totally fearless of humans which makes them a selfie sensation.
Often hailed as the most isolated city in the world, Perth is geographically closer to both Dili, East Timor and Jakarta, Indonesia than to Sydney or Brisbane!
Although isolated from the rest of Australia by the vast outback, Perth is actually located in the most populous time zone in the world. Australian Western Standard Time is two hours behind Queensland.
Lucky Perth airport offers plenty of regional, domestic and international flights and is a quick 35-minute taxi from the city. Jandakot Airport in the city’s southern suburbs provides general aviation and charter flights.
In fact, the one of the top 3 longest direct flights takes off in Perth and travels 17 hours to London, making Europe easily accessible if you’re up for it!
But if you don’t want to leave, then there are 70 railway stations and 15 bus stations in the metropolitan area making public transport a breeze. In 2016 Perth came seventh in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s list of the world’s most liveable cities.
Perth is also home to four public universities; the University of Western Australia, Curtin University, Murdoch University, and Edith Cowan University. There is also the private University of Notre Dame Australia.
There is plenty of culture and history in the city too. As part of Perth’s role as the capital of Western Australia, the state’s Parliament, Supreme Court and Government House (the residence of the Governor of Western Australia) are located within the city centre.
There are also many heritage sites in Perth’s CBD, Fremantle, and other parts of the metropolitan areas. Some of the oldest remaining buildings, dating back to the 1830s, include the Round House in Fremantle, the Old Mill in South Perth, and the Old Court House in the city centre.
The Perth Mint is the oldest mint that issues Australian dollar coins for circulation! The only other mint issuing coins for legal tender in Australia, is the Royal Australian Mint.
Several annual events are held in Perth including The Perth International Arts Festival which has been held every year since 1953. Its popularity resulted in the accompanying Winter Arts festival, Perth Fringe Festival, and Perth Writers Festival!
The Perth Cultural Centre is home to many of the city’s major arts, cultural and educational institutions, including the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Western Australian Museum, State Library of Western Australia, State Records Office, and Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA)
One of Perth’s most distinctive architectural landmarks is the largest performance area within the State Theatre Centre. The Heath Ledger Theatre is named in honour of the late, Perth-born film actor and is a stunning place to see the performing arts.
Performing arts companies based in Perth include the West Australian Ballet, the West Australian Opera and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, all of which exhibit regular performances. The annual Perth International Comedy Festival features a variety of local and international comedic talent and always attracts a large audience.
Perth also hosts annual music festivals including Listen Out, Origin and St Jerome’s Laneway Festival.
Perth Arena can be configured as an entertainment or sporting arena, and concerts are also hosted at other sporting venues, including Optus Stadium, HBF Stadium, and nib Stadium.
Fremantle was the first port for many ships arriving in Australia from Europe in the ‘50s and ’60s, and as a result, Perth has embraced a diverse population. The European influence can be seen in places like the “Cappuccino strip” in Fremantle which showcases many Italian cafes, restaurants and shops.
Retail shopping in the Perth CBD is focused around Murray Street and Hay Street in the form of pedestrian malls. Forrest Place is another pedestrian mall, connecting the Murray Street mall to Wellington Street and the Perth railway station.
But the demand for more accessible retail in Perth is at an all-time high.
Our Perth warehouse means buying and selling has become even easier for Western Australia locals. Access to a local drop off and pick up point makes it convenient for bidders and vendors alike.
We have major WA retailers that sell excess or insurance claim stock through us. We also specialise in art, jewellery, furniture, antiques and our favourite, classic cars!
Many of our Perth auctions happen regularly every week, fortnight or month which makes it easy for locals to browse for camping gear, a new mattress or a new wagon.
Our online auctions are a great way to pick up a bargain and an easy way to shop a variety of different items, all in one online location. Perfect for those who never have time!
We can even ship purchases from our Perth warehouse right to the doorstep meaning more time for exploring the Margaret River or the Jarrahdale State Forest, and cheaper shipping fees!
